Episode 100 Hornworms

Today I discuss two garden insects that can do a lot of damage to your tomato crop (and tobacco if you are so inclined to grow it).

Hornworms are really neat insects to observe (far away from your tomato plot though!).  They are colorful and large.

*Two ways you can easily find hornworms in your garden.

*What hornworms really are.

*Do they sting with that huge horn?

    They make great catfish bait.

Holy cow, never thought about that.  Have you ever tried catalpa worms? – they look very similar, just smaller and no horn.

I remember long ago when I was a just a kid, going up to Lake Euche or  Spavinaw or somewhere on a family fishing trip and my Uncle Marion had a whole bunch of catalpa worms.  Can’t remember how well they worked as bait but I seem to recall hearing my uncle brag about how many he caught with them.  Long, long ago.

Love catalpa worms.  Sometimes they are the only things the catfish will eat.
