Today I cover (pun intended) Cover Crops!
You all have been requesting this for some time but until someone put in the Paypal receipt for their FSKP purchase did I really get the message, you all want to hear about COVER CROPS!
So let’s dig a little deeper.
What are cover crops? A crop grown for the benefit of the soil/garden and not necessarily for the gardener (in the short run).
Why would we plant them? Soil fertility, Soil quality, water holding, traps nutrients or makes them available, suppresses weeds, keeps disease or pests down and helps wildlife and livestock.
How do you plant them? Just spread the seeds broadcast style!
When do you plant them? It depends on the crop and why you are planting it.
What are some good cover crops? Well you need to do some research in your area or look into the Food Security Knowledge Pack but here’s a handy chart from Cornell. http://www.gardening.cornell.edu/factsheets/ecogardening/impsoilcov.html
