Episode 130 Interview with Jack Spirko from The Survival Podcast

Today I have the pleasure of sharing an interview I did with my friend Jack Spirko from www.thesurvivalpodcast.com.

Listening or talking to Jack sometimes is like getting hit by a cargo train full of ideas and trying to hang on.  So tune in today and hang as Jack elaborates on some killer ideas about homesteading and gardening!

*Why and How Jack thinks we can make meat sustainable.

*Advanced cover cropping (Jack may just call it cover cropping 101 though!).  Spoiler alert – don’t use just one variety and think about succession.

*Hugelkultur – sometimes its about making the right choices on inputs.

*How to make weeds and pests sustainable.  That’s really a joke I made.  If you want to make these two things a perpetual problem in your garden forever then ignore the advice in this podcast!

*Pigeons and how other cultures and countries can give us fresh ideas about how to do things sustainably.

  • Can’t wait to get to the office and download it!  — boy I love saying that… I remember when I wasn’t supposed to be listening to podcasts at work, and now I can justify it as PART of my work.  🙂

Great episode! All over the place but all interesting. Regarding the pigeon rearing part, you may be able to find more info if you look for “dovecotes” or “dovecots.” Keep up the good work!

Thanks.  All over the place is my fault.  I just figured anybody in my place would want to ask a ton of questions.  LOL

Thanks for the info on the dovecotes.  It was funny but when we got off the phone I think we both had that realization and looked them up.  There’s actually quite a bit of info out there. I was surprised.

Glad you get to say that Dene!

Awesome! Can’t wait to listen. I’ll be interested in hearing about the pigeons.

I didn’t mean “all over the map” to be a criticism. The best podcasts, in my opinion are the conversations between knowledgeable people into what they’re doing. A big feast for thought.

I don’t raise pigeons (yet?) but first got the idea when reading Steven Rinella’s “The Scavenger’s Guide to Haute Cuisine.” I think as a hunter you’d really like the book, too.

Mark – No worries, I didn’t take it as criticism.  More laughing at my style.  I always feel like time is pressing on me!

    That book sounds very interesting!

    Thanks Mil!

Glad to have you back! I contracted Lyme Disease 3 weeks ago and am taking Artemisia Annua (a species of wormwood) and a bunch of other supplements and Doxycycline to treat it. Artemisia is also used as an antifungal and malaria treatment. I am also fond of Absinthe.

Geesh Andrew – You ok now?  Hope you are feeling better and send medicine my way!
