Episode 69 – The Advantages of Suburban Gardening

Its not some shock title or a late April Fool’s joke. There really are some advantages to gardening in suburbia. I really would like to just live in the country and forget about anything resembling city life and factories and strip malls. But for most of us tied to doing jobs we really don’t care for just to make a living we have to accept – to a degree, and for a time – suburbia.

I love this picture. The juxtaposition of the wildness of my grape vine and technology is stunning.

Tune in today as I discuss…

*Why I refuse to let the suburban ideal get in the way of my homesteading and gardening.

*How (if you can) building community is the answer to a lot of food problems.

*There are a lot of resources in the suburbs and nearby cities that are wasted.  We just have to find and utilize.

*How structures and plots of land in suburbs lend themselves to gardening and permaculture.

I hear you on the suburban neighbors and not just throwing things away. My mower stopped working and my mother-in-law suggested I just buy another one. Aside from the expense, that was just a waste. I ended up spending $45 to get it running.

Also, I had a couple of bicycles that we weren’t using. I actually found a couple of neighborhood kids to give them too. It kept them from cluttering up the landfill and built good will with my neighbors.

Great philosophy Tim! On the farm there was no such thing as running to town to get a new anything. I can’t remember how many things we fixed and how long we made them last. Its true things aren’t made like that anymore but I certainly don’t consider anything disposable!
