Episode 97 Blueberries

Today I take on the subject of blueberries.  Blueberries are one of my favorite fruits to eat.  Growing them is very possible and not too challenging as long as you do the research, plan well and learn from your mistakes.  (This show is very heavy in “ums” and poor delivery as I tried to get my notes in order – sorry!)

*Blueberries in history (uniquely American!)

*Two main varieties and the multitude of sub varieties.

*How to prune.

*How to make your soil acidic.  I go on a long sidebar about some myths about acidity and certain mulches.

I would like to hear an episode on putting it all together. Garden, orchard, berries, bees and so on to a complete system. I would also like to hear how effective you have managed to get your own system. How much you are not required to spend at the store, how much of your daily diet is yours and how much the stores. I know that you have moved through out your life and have had to start over and have learned new tips and techniques. A kind of composite show, I know that’s a lot for an hour.

I can do a show on that but I’d probably embarrass myself.  I keep telling myself its a marathon not a sprint and its hard sometimes when I’m struggling to get an apple tree just to bearing size and fighting the squirrels and deer at my other property and the beetles here at this one.  But I can share those things and give the theory of how it should work at maturity.  But I guarantee there are a lot of you guys and gals that are more self-sufficient than me.

Thanks for the suggestion.  Its a good one.

Jason, alot of us listen to every podcast, read the material you post, and really enjoy SSG. Don’t worry about “ums”, sidebars, or anything thats not perfect. That’s one of the reasons I like to listen (the not perfect thing).
Tip some some 100.. Don’t worry about being perfect. You learn from mistakes. You don’t learn much from just getting lucky. Keep up the good work.
I’ve killed more blueberry bushes than I can count on one hand. This show was very helpful.

Thanks BZ, I appreciate the vote of confidence.

I too am a blueberry bush murderer.  I hope I’ve got it figured out this time!Jason

    Jason,
When is the best time to get blueberry bushes in the ground? I’m in zone 6B and would love to get some in this year or should I wait till next year?

    Thanks,
    Mike

    Mike,

This year when the trees have dropped most of their leaves it will be a fine time to plant some!
